Annotation

This is the original LP released in 1964 by Columbia. On the A side is a 1958 live concert by the Miles Davis Sextet featuring John Coltrane and Julian Cannonball Adderley. On the B side is a 1961 live concert by the Thelonious Monk Quartet with Pee Wee Russell. Both were recorded at the Newport Jazz Festival. Note that Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk do not play together on this album.

In 1994 Columbia released a two-disc album titled Live at Newport 1958 & 1963. Both performances were split to their own CD and several tracks were added to each.

Both performances were again re-released in 2001 and 2002 but as distinct albums. The Miles Davis album was unchanged from the 1994 release but was retitled At Newport 1958. However the Thelonious Monk concert was split over two discs, contained additional material and was retitled At Newport 1963 & 1965.

Columbia also re-released the 1958 Miles Davis concert both as a separate album (Miles And Coltrane in 1998) with a slightly different track listing and as disc 5 of The Complete Columbia Recordings 1955-1961 box set in 2004.
