BACH KANTATEN BWV 140 - 61 - 36

~ Release by Johann Sebastian Bach (see all versions of this release, 2 available)

Annotation

The cantata BWV 140 was first performed in Leipzig on 25 November 1731, one week before the beginning of the Advent season. This cantata is arguably the best and most popular of all from the pen of Johann Sebastian Bach. Bach composed the two cantatas BWV61 and BWV36 for the first sunday after Advent. BWV61 is an original adaptation of Luther's chorale "Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland". BWV36 is "recycled" from an older secular cantata using a new text. The formal layout of this cantata, made up of eight movements, is unique in Bach's oeuvre.
