Annotation

This abridged audiobook includes every chapter of the print version, but with some deletions and modifications. Completely absent are the dedication, acknowledgements, and epigraph, as well as a copy of an email that Torvalds sent to Diamond, in which he accepts Diamond's proposal to write a book together.

Both Torvalds' and Diamond's parts are written in the first-person mode. However, since Diamond is the sole narrator of everything except the preface, he reads himself in the first-person, but narrates Torvalds in the third-person. Thus, "I made my file system compatible" becomes "Linus made his file system compatible", and so on. In some cases, if a line didn't read well in the third-person, it was omitted entirely.

In my examination, I did not systematically determine what was deleted from the body of the text: I only compared a few fragments from each chapter. My impression, for what it's worth, was that most of the book is intact. None of the deletions that I noticed were longer than two sentences, and in each case the deletion was an editorial decision, rather than a sacrifice made to fit the recording onto CD.
