... The evolution of Brazilian pop music from the innocent early 60s Bossa Nova to the politically charged 70s MPB (Musica Popular Brasileira) seems to have been undertaken by people looking down the wrong end of a kaleidoscope! Life under a military dictatorship, the immense global success of Bossa Nova and an emerging fervent nationalism all clashed with the influence of The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, James Brown, Black Power and Hippie Ideals. All these influences (together with the all pervasive legacy of Samba never far from the surface) created a radical new pop music that defies obvious categorisation and is today more popular than ever before. This is music from a parallel universe - The true Soul of Brazil!
