Pritam, popular purveyor of catchy music, needs little introduction. Here he has done a marvellous job composing some superb trademark tracks that will surely storm the charts. It's also noteworthy as it features celebrated international artists, including Snoop Dogg and RDB on the title track, as well as Hard Kaur throughout. This is a regal soundtrack with several lyrical jewels.
Akshay Kumar makes an enjoyable appearance rapping in Hindi on the title track, which sounds very much like Bas Ek Kinng' though it's Hard Kaur instead who sticks in the memory here. Lab Jan Jua, on Jee Karda, is perfect as the vocal equivalent for Akshay, suiting his singing voice to a tee. He should do more of this.
The Punjabi-style continues to triumph on Bhootni Ke with Daler Mehndi. His strong and unequivocally dominant voice projects the song, unlike its Tiger Style Mix where his brother, Mika, transforms it into a dab squib. But another element comes into play with Teri Ore. Shreya Ghosal's angelic vocals lift the song to new heights, while Rahat Fateh Ali Khan joins in to support this lilting fairytale ballad that is surely the highlight of this soundtrack.
Talli Hua lowers the tone, however, and not even Labh Jan Jua's initial impressive stint from Jee Karda can help. The song is prosaic and lacks any kind of coherent style; the Jay Dabhi Mix does nothing to improve it either. In fact, if it wasn't for the repetitive remix versions of each song, the album would be a whole lot neater and brighter. They marr the integrity of the originals and end up leaving them in tatters, far from enhancing as they should.
On the whole a satisfying experience, but don't expect anything extraordinary.
