Come With Me, Tania Maria's worldwide breakthrough album, is viewed with tremendous rapture by her legion of fans. Tania Maria Correa Reis studied classical music in Brazil as a child, and was involved in Rio's burgeoning jazz as a teenager. A move to Paris in the 70s made her name as she took a residency at the Via Brazil restaurant.

Relocating to New York at the start of the 80s, she signed to Concord and began releasing a chain of fabulous, piano-based recordings. Her third album for the label, Come With Me, is certainly something of an early peak for her.

Come With Me is packed with feisty originals, alongside a cover of George Gershwin's Embraceable You. Working with musicians the calibre of Eddie Duran on guitar and Portinho on percussion, it provided a waft of Brazilian sunshine in the sometimes dark musical days of the 80s.

The title track chimed perfectly with listeners who wanted more of artists such as George Benson, who had departed their scat-singing jazz style for more commercial climes. The later remix by Masters At Work locates the track's swing.

Undoubtedly an influence on the Acid Jazz scene and the Talkin' Loud label, Come With Me may remain an acquired taste for some but for those with a rapturous, open musical mind, this is a marvellous work

Tania Maria has gone on to be one of the most respected artists of her generation, playing countless festivals, globetrotting and award-winning, but it will be for this, her calling card, that she will be most fondly remembered.
