After the Happy Mondays and Primal Scream opened the 'cross-over gates' all those years ago the Stereo MC's followed suit and once again ushered the sensibilities of rave into indie music. Nine years on and one prolonged absence over, the Stereo's have returned with 'Deep, Down & Dirty'; a grittier, edgier update on the hip hop fusion of 1992's classic 'Connected'.
Littered with big piano riffs that throw back to the Mondays and bass lines that Grand Master Flash, given half the chance, would have mauled and made his own in an instant, the album delivers a tougher, live sound for a band resurrected. Rob Birch's sometimes inaccessible, distinctive UK style rapping is present as always yet there are moments where his vocals soar into the sublime. Fortunately for us they have delayed the release of this album until the material would do them justice rather than fill the void. To coin the most classic of Tongisms, they are "large and lively like they never went away."
