Typical. In a year in which many of the highlights have had more than a whiff of emperor's new clothes about them, it falls to Wilco to squeeze under the wire for an 'album of the year' contender. Kicking Television is glorious.

Capping ten years of re-invention re-tooling and rehab, it's significant that Jeff Tweedy chose now to document his band's live sound; for newcomers Nels Cline and Pat Sansone make this the best Wilco yet. This double disc set, drawn from four nights in Chicago, shows a band deeply in love with the process of simply making music.

Impressively stretching from innocent ballads to noise terror (often simultaneously as on ''Via Chicago'') The album's title is also strangely appropriate: Tweedy and Cline could easily be the new Verlaine and Lloyd. Alt country is no longer their playground; they make Wilco music and it's much, much better than watching television...
