"Elaine Paige, who had filled in when Betty Buckley (as Norma in the second run of the original West End production, following Patti LuPone who introduced the role in the original 1993 West End production when it first opened) was ill in 1994, took over the part in the West End in May 1995 before joining the Broadway production for the end of its run between 1996 and 1997.
