The Sony Masterworks label group comprises these imprints: Masterworks Broadway, Masterworks Jazz, Masterworks, Okeh, Portrait, RCA Red Seal, and Sony Classical.
Formed originally as an imprint in the 1990s* and later reformed as a label group in 2009 that became the successor to Sony BMG Masterworks, when Sony bought out BMG's half of the former Sony BMG merger. It owns rights to recordings dating from the late 19th century through the 20th century, and also manages Sony's immense archives of film scores and theater soundtracks, via its Masterworks Broadway imprint.
* as a label/imprint, Sony Masterworks had existed since the 1990s, even prior to Sony BMG Masterworks, after Sony took over the CBS Records group, echoing the former labels CBS Masterworks and Columbia Masterworks. this earlier incarnation of Sony Masterworks bore a logo with the name over a graphic of a musical note.
