"How To Identify Labels?" Discussion

Some comments and questions based on the examples. First, though, much nicer pandabear!  :) Ok, your example 1: I think this gets to imprint vs company, but I've seen it often in edit debates. You say "Contemporary Records". However, in the second scan, it shows as "Contemporary Records, Inc". So, am I right then to assume the "Inc" version should be, if added at all, set as a separate label for the company, whereas "Contemporary Records" is the imprint?

  • If there is a serious reason that justifies the separation (and most times, there is none!), yes, that split would go. Stressing it again: most times, there is just no reason to split things, it just confuse people (which to use?) for absolutely no added value. -- dmppanda 18:03, 10 February 2008 (UTC)

Now, going from your listing of the overkill situation to a few next-to-nothing situations, your above examples are useful, but what about the opposing cases, where there's next to nothing, or it just isn't cut and dried which is the imprint, and which the company?

  • Sure, there are a lot of corner/difficult cases. I tried to keep this HowTo to a reasonably short list with relatively common cases. Though, let's take a look at your stuff ;) - note that I will provide below just a very fast opinion without doing any real research (for now - if you want more, I would need at least the release and artists names (case 2)!) -- dmppanda 18:03, 10 February 2008 (UTC)

Number 1: pandaimage1.jpg

Note: "JHU" is the abbreviation for the college they were from, it's not indicating anything about a label. The white is the only useful bit from the inner liner.

  • That's a hard one. I first thought "ARC" - but that's the manufacturer. The copyright mentions clearly credits "The John Hopkins University AllNighters". JHU may (after all) seems like a reasonable choice. Or possibly (as this is what that stuff is) put this under a SpecialPurposeLabel for autorealeases (see the relevant style thread). -- dmppanda 18:03, 10 February 2008 (UTC)
    • Given the choice of a "The John Hopkins University AllNighters" label I know is bogus, for such an autorelease, I'd much rather go with a "Self Release" type of SpecialPurposeLabel like has been discussed a few times. -- BrianSchweitzer 09:15, 16 February 2008 (UTC)

Number 2: pandaimage2.jpg

Absolutely nothing on the liner, only identifying info at all is on the CD.

  • "Recording Arts" sounds like a bet. Definitely need to research things about these names, though. Can you provide at least the artist and album name? -- dmppanda 18:03, 10 February 2008 (UTC)

Number 3: pandaimage3.jpg

(side note, the other CD I have from this band only lists Chrysalis, no Beer Breath.)

  • That one seems easier. Definitely either "Chryplus" or "Beer Breath Music". A search on either will probably turn out some info about which is what (my bet on Chryplus, possibly related to Chrysalis - see Wacky for infos about Chrysalis) -- dmppanda 18:03, 10 February 2008 (UTC)
