The soul of Lovehead and The Real emanates from a core of musicians whose passion bleeds through every song. Its predecessor Lovehead, the brainchild of Christopher Wells, began as an explorative journey into the emotional depths of this complex artist. Recognized for his vocal ability from an early age, this multi-instrumentalist defies conventional categorization. An accomplished guitarist and bassist, he has also been known to tickle the ivories if it fits the mood of the song.
Wells was surrounded by musical talent as a child with blues, soul and jazz musicians peppering his family tree. At 19, he formed Peasants of the Apocalypse, an industrial rock band ahead of its time. After various projects including a brief stint with NC pop darlings The Veldt, Wells turned his focus toward his next incarnation. Lovehead was spawned out of the growth Wells experienced. Lyrically, his focus shifted from angry commentary on life’s external forces to the soul-searching he faced within. Stirring melodic compositions are accentuated by Wells’ own layered production techniques. In challenging himself both technically and emotionally, his songwriting straddles several genres seamlessly.
The evolution of this band added Mike Davis of NC reggae favs The Amateurs. Davis brings the casual sensuality of his reggae influence. Through his skilled guitar, vocals, bass and keyboards, this multifaceted musician creates harmony with Wells’ versatility. Jon McClain (also of Price Is Right fame--yes, really) supplies the enveloping rhythm that melds this complex project. McClain’s drumming career endeavors range from indie punk bands Ugly Americans and Picasso Trigger to metal edged Leadfoot. From complementary yet diverse musical backgrounds, these three are hell bent on shattering the paradigm of programmed pop. Lovehead and The Real challenge music’s boundaries with a palpable rawness that takes you on the emotional journey with them. By fusing rock, soul, funk and blues into one cohesive sound, these multi-instrumentalists create their own vibe. Feel it.
