ROX is the stage name of South London singer-songwriter Roxanne Tataei.
Born in Norbury, she is half-Jamaican, half-Iranian. She cites living with her grandparents and being a regular churchgoer as her introduction to singing. By age ten, Rox was a part of the National Youth Music Theatre and traveled across Britain appearing in various productions with them. By her fourteenth birthday Rox had her first guitar and was experimenting with several musical genres. Her influences include Lauryn Hill, Joni Mitchell, Sade, Mary J. Blige and Alanis Morissette
After forming her first band in 2007, Rox attracted interest from a variety of labels, before settling with Rough Trade Records. Since this, Rox has appeared on tours with the likes of Mark Ronson and Daniel Merriweather as well as television show Later... with Jools Holland. Rox has also appeared at Reading and Leeds Festivals with Wiley and BBC Electric Proms with Nitin Sawhney. Rox was featured as The Guardian's New Band of the Day on 23rd November 2009.
Rox is due to release her debut album, 'Memoirs' in Spring 2010. The album was originally recorded in New Jersey in April 2009, but was shelved after Rox felt the album was no longer a true reflection of herself. She started again with former Jay-Z and Lupe Fiasco producer Al Shux to create the album she wanted. Her track 'I Don't Believe' is currently being used in an advertising campaign by Rimmel.
Rox's debut single 'No Going Back' is due to be released on December 15th.
