She was born as Rachel Renee Robinson, and has gotten married twice: first to Sam Purkin, then to Charles Stegeman.

In 1989, she relocated to Southern California, and accepted a principal position in the Pacific Symphony Orchestra. While living there, she became a sought after violinist in the recording industry, performing on sessions in the motion picture industry, as well as the television and record industries. She eventually became the Assistant Concertmaster of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra and the Assistant Concertmaster of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra.

In 2002, she moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and began serving as Adjunct Professor at Duquesne University in Applied Violin, Orchestral Literature and Repertoire, and Chamber Music. She also holds the positions of Concertmaster of both the Youngstown Symphony and Wheeling Symphony, and Associate Concertmaster of the Pittsburgh Opera Orchestra and the Pittsburgh Ballet Orchestra.
