The Jungle Band (Chick Webb's first orchestra)

~ Group

Annotation

History

The Jungle Band was an early (apparently short-lived) Chick Webb orchestra that he formed with his cousin Johnny Hodges (who will later on be illustrious), sometimes between 1925 and 1929.
Apparently, only two cuts were recorded, first issued as Brunswick 4450, unfortunately reissued later on under Ellington's name whose band at that time had the same moniker (don't confuse the two!).

Webb would soon turn the Jungle Band into the famous Chick Webb and his Orchestra.

Releases

The two cuts are nowadays available in the recommended Chronological Chick Webb releases, and on the GRP Decca compilation. They apparently were also selected by the BBC to be part of their Jazz Classics serie.

Issues

If you happen to know the exact venue details for the 78rpm, or any other details about the band members / date of creation/disband, please contribute them!
