Biography

Highly respected by fellow musicians, Mr Payne baritone sax was one of the strongholds of Gillespie's formations in the late 40's.
Also spotted with Randy Weston and Count Basie, he led a number of under-rated sessions under his own name, on until the beginning of the new millennium.
Mainly ignored both by the general audience and the critics, Mr Payne deserves to be rediscovered and appreciated as one of the major baritone sax voice of the 20th century, from swing to bop.
Chic Boom, which Payne performed at 77 years old, is highly recommended.
