Annotation
A true jazz icon, a major tenor sax, Theodore Walter Rollins career spans more than sixty years.
During the only 50's period, he recorded an incredible amount of sessions (mainly for Prestige, Blue Note and Contemporary), most of which are considered historical.
Rollins featured extensively with other jazz giants, from Thelonious Monk to Max Roach.
Beginners can take a safe pick with any of the 50's-60's records, including Tenor Madness, Saxophone Colossus and Newk's Time.
On May 21, 2007, Sonny Rollins was awarded The Polar Prize from the Royal Swedish Academy of Music. Each year, one such award is given to a pop or jazz composer, with a second such award going to a classical composer. (Steve Reich was the winner in the classical category).
