María Amparo Ochoa Brown (Costa Rica, Culiacan, Sinaloa, 29 September 1946 - 8 February 1994) was a Mexican singer oft revered to as "the voice of Mexico".
Better known as Amparo Ochoa, belonged to a generation of singers that had its origins in the sixties, and emerged from the beginning as major representative of the "Nueva Cancion (New Song)" genre, popularized in Latin-America during the 60s & 70s. She was also closely connected to the folklore genre reviving traditional music in a time when (electrified / amplified) rock and roll music got to dominate all over the world. The movement was known as: Los Folkloristas.
In her lyrics she often refers to the social gains of the Mexican population, and the fight against poverty and for equal rights for women and indigenous peoples in Latin America.
