Annotation

This release is "Edition I" (first pressing, second take, drum solo).

Two different takes of Ascension were recorded.
The second take was used for the initial release, but upon Coltrane insistence, the pressings were withdrawn, and replaced by new pressings using the first take, the only visible difference being some etching in the outgroove.
Modern cd edition of this present both takes, labeled respectively "Edition I" (the first pressing, using the second take), and "Edition II" (the repressings, using the first take).

Here are some pictures of the imprint of vinyl copies (though it's hard to tell if they are Edition I or Edition II):
Side 1
Side 2 (<- this one should be from Edition I)

Both takes were complete performances that were divided as to fit on a single LP (CD releases contain the pieces without any split).
Elvin Jones only solos on Edition I (just after the bass duet).

Apparently, despite Coltrane instructions, Edition I was repressed a number of times as:
MCA 254745 - HMV CLP/CSD 3543 (Europe?) - King SR-3026/3028 (Japan); JVC VIM4666 (Japan)
