Pennyroyal Tea
~ Release by Nirvana (see all versions of this release, 2 available)
Annotation
This is an exceptionally rare release that was scheduled to ship in April 1994. With the untimely death of Kurt Cobain, and the depressingly-titled b-side, Geffen decided that existing copies would be destroyed and versions set to be released in several countries would never be pressed in large quantities. Promo CDs and vinyl copies had been circulated in small numbers (less than 50 of the single-track CD, it is believed) but the three-tracker listed here apparently reached stores in Europe, particularly in Sweden, Germany and the UK.
The single was notable in that it featured a Scott Litt mix of the lead track, which was otherwise only available on the censored Wal-Mart/Kmart release of It Utero.
Because of the rarity of this release, it is a valuable collector's item and bootlegged copies have been discovered.
The official CDs will have a matrix number Sonopress I-2211/Ged21907 A
The more widely available fake is a clone of the real thing but with tiny differences on the sleeve. It has the matrix number ++++GED21907++++ and is thought to have been pressed and printed professionally in Sweden.
The one-track promo CD has many typographical errors on the disc itself, but it was official and has cat no: NIRPRO and matrix NIRPRO1.
