Relationship Type "Remixer"

Link Phrases

  • artist remixed album or track

  • album or track was remixed by artist

Description

This relationship links a work to the artist who remixed it. This is only for what RemixMeansDifferentThings describes as "proper" remixes. This involves taking just one other work and using audio editing to make it sound like a significantly different, but usually still recognisable, song. It can be used to link an artist to a single song that they remixed, or, if they remixed an entire album, to that album.

"Remix" is the one relationship which overlaps with a bunch of others, and there are no sharp distinctions that we can make. Read RemixMeansDifferentThings for the full discussion. RemixRelationshipType has a list of alternative relationship types that can be used. You'll just have to use your best judgement as to which is best to represent the particular situation. Here are some alternative relationships for linking an artist to a "remixed" version that you might consider:

  • If two or more songs are mixed together, this is a mash-up. In this case, the person who made the mash-up is the PrimaryArtist of the work (see VersusStyle).

  • If the work is substantially original, but contains samples from another song, then the person who provides the samples is usually the PrimaryArtist. You can also use "performed instrument on" with instrument "Sampler" (see PerformerRelationshipType).

  • If this is a compilation CD, with a bunch of previously-released tracks just put in a particular order by a compiler: CompilerRelationshipType (currently only a proposal).

  • If this is a mix CD, in which each track has been altered to make a continuous mix, then the MixDJRelationshipType is appropriate (currently only a proposal).

  • If a work is a remaster of another, without significant musical changes, then the person who produced the remaster is a mix engineer: see EngineerRelationshipType.

The remix itself can be related to the original source work using RemixRelationshipType.

This AdvancedRelationshipType for ReleaseArtistRelationships and ArtistTrackRelationships is part of the RemixRelationshipClass.
