Description
A remix of a work is a substantially altered version produced by mixing together individual tracks or segments of an original source work. Outside MusicBrainz, the word "remix" is not very well defined (see RemixMeansDifferentThings and Remix). For the purposes of this relationship, however, we have a somewhat more specific definition. We distingush remixing from other ways of altering an original like so:
If the music has not been substantially altered, so that it can't reasonably be said that the new mix involved musical creativity, then this is probably a remaster, and the RemasterRelationshipType would be more appropriate.
If parts of a song are combined with parts from several other songs, with no clear dominant song among them, then the work is a mash-up (see Mash-up). The MashUpRelationshipType should be used in this case.
If a small section of the song is used as an instrument or highlight in another song which contains substantial original material, then it is a sample, and the SamplesRelationshipType should be used.
If the work has been included on a compilation in which the ends of the songs have been tweaked to give a continuous mix, then this is a DJ-mix. The DJMixRelationshipType should be used in this case.
The following factors are not important when deciding if something is a remix or not:
A remix doesn't have to consist only of material taken from the source work. It may include other substantial material (e.g. original material recorded by the remixer or by other musicians). This still counts as a remix as long as the source work work is the "main" source of material.
A remix can be made using the individual source tracks used to produce the original master (German: Tonspuren), or it could be made from the final mixed stereo version.
This AdvancedRelationshipType is part of the RemixRelationshipClass.
Role of the Remixing Artist
A remix is produced by a remixer. You can use the RemixerRelationshipType to relate the remixed work to the person who remixed it.
