Class of AdvancedRelationshipTypes for Remixes

This class represents music that was created by the process of recombining existing recordings, also known as remixing (but note that RemixMeansDifferentThings!).

The similar classes for compilations and alternative versions are discussed in CompilationRelationshipClass and AlternativeVersionRelationshipClass.

Advanced Relationship Types

  • Remixed Material (entity pairs between tracks and albums)

    • RemixRelationshipType:

      • track is a remix of track

        • Indicates that one or more original tracks have been substantially altered and mixed together with other material to form a new track. Remixes of multiple tracks or albums are usually called mash-ups.

      • album is a remix of album

        • Indicates that an album includes remixed versions of all (or most of) the tracks of the other album.

    • MashUpRelationshipType:

      • track is a mash-up of track

        • Indicates that the track consist of mash-ups from material of two (or more) other track. This means that two pieces of music by different artists are mixed together, over each other, or otherwise combined into a single track (usually by a third artist, the remixer).

      • album is a mash-up of albums

        • Indicates that the tracks of the album consits of mash-ups from material of two (or more) other albums. This means that two pieces of music by different artists are mixed together, over each other, or otherwise combined into a single work (usually by a third artist, the remixer).

    • SamplesRelationshipType:

      • track contains samples from tracks

        • Indicates that a track contains samples from another (or more) tracks.

  • Role of the Remixing Artist (entity pairs containing artist)

    • RemixerRelationshipType:

      • album was remixed by artist

        • Indicates the person who remixed the album by taking tracks, substanially altering them and mixing them together with other material. Note that this one is used for the artist who created a mash-up or used samples as well.

    • SamplesArtistRelationshipType:

      • <!> This type is deprectated and should be deleted in the long run!

      • artist produced material that is sample in album

        • Indicates that the album contains samples from material that was originally performed by another artist. Use this only if you really cannot figure out the particular track tht has been sampled.

Historical Discussion

<!> The following discussion resulted in the new types that are described above. It is of historical interest only.

The types of this class probably need an overhaul. Currently we cannot seem to represent eveything that happens in the culture of mixing and remixing songs too well.

Just as VersusMeansDifferentThings RemixMeansDifferentThings and the current relationship types do not represent that well.

The best idea is probably to make one relationship type of "material was used in a track" and add different subtypes about the way it was used, e.g. sampled, mashed-up, remixed, just dj-mixed (i.e. pitch altered/faded).

At the same time there already is one type of the person who did the whatever-mixing: the RemixerRelationshipType. The exact role could be specified by subtypes, again. But is this really necessary? --DonRedman
