Primary Artist

Description

The MusicBrainz database can relate one Artist to a Track or Release (via a CoreRelationship). This is the primary artist.

The primary artist is called TrackArtist for Tracks, and ReleaseArtist for Releases.

Additional informations

Usually the main attributed performer will be the primary artist: you can read ReleaseArtistStyle and TrackArtistStyle for further informations.

Note that classical music follows a different rule (the primary artist is the composer): see the ClassicalStyleGuide for more details.

Further artists can be related to Tracks or Releases via AdvancedRelationships. These are called SecondaryArtists.

Examples

Masada is the primary artist for the release Alef
Albert Ayler is the primary artist for the release The First Recordings
Creedence Clearwater Revival is the primary artist for the release Boxed Set (disc 1: 1961-1967: Pre-Creedence). Note that none of the TrackArtists is the same as the ReleaseArtist.
