Description

This indicates that a recording reproduces a work, in whole or in part.

Attributes

“start date”

For recordings created at a known date, this indicates the start date of the recording.

“end date”

For recordings created at a known date, this indicates the end date of the recording.

“live”

This indicates that the recording is of a live performance.

“cover”

This indicates that the recording is a cover version of a previously recorded work.

“partial”

This indicates that the recording is not of the entire work, e.g. excerpts from, conclusion of, etc.

“instrumental”

For works that have lyrics, this indicates that those lyrics are not relevant to this recording. Examples include instrumental arrangements, or “beats” from hip-hop songs which may be reused with different lyrics.

Guidelines

Use the "live" attribute when the performance had an audience at the time it occurred, i.e. was not prerecorded.

For live recordings, the end date is usually the same as the start date. For most live albums from a single concert starting close to midnight and ending early in the morning, it's OK to just use the start date of the event on all concert recordings.

Do not use the "partial" attribute if there is a work that corresponds to the recording. For example, The Planets: Mars, the Bringer of War should not be considered a partial performance of The Planets, Op. 32, Suite, but simply a performance of The Planets Suite for Orchestra, Op. 32: I. Mars, the Bringer of War. Guidelines on where works should be split can be found at Parts Relationship Type.

Use the "instrumental" attribute only for works that have lyrics. For example, East St. Louis Toodle-Oo is a recording of East St. Louis Toodle-Oo, not an instrumental recording, since the work does not include lyrics.

Because the lyrics are important to karaoke versions of a song (the intention is that someone would sing them over the karaoke track), karaoke versions should not be marked with the “instrumental” attribute. Note that in addition to this recording relationship, you should also link a karaoke track to the original recording with the Karaoke Version Relationship Type.
