Label Sort Name

Description

Each Label in MusicBrainz has one Label Sort Name, which is a variant of the LabelName. It has two purposes:

  • ensure correct sorting

  • use only characters from the latin charset (de-stylization and transliterations)

Rules for Label Sort Name share with artist SortNameStyle, but are more simple.

Label Sort Name Style

  1. All Label Sort Name must be in latin script. Japanese, Chinese, Greek, Russian (etc...) LabelName have to be transliterated.

  2. For LabelName that are stylized, change stylized characters to their closest equivalent letter in the latin charset, and remove any style-only characters. This applies to names which include unusual punctuation or spacing which is not intended to be pronounced using the normal rules.

  3. The sort name contain all the accented characters that are present in the LabelName, as long as they're in latin script.

  4. All parts of a sort name are separated by ", " (comma and space). At that time, there is only one reason to create two parts in a sort name: if it begins with "The". In this case, "The" should be put at the end of the name. Example: The Verve Music Group should sort to Verve Music Group, The. Note that this is true also for other languages that do put definite articles at the end when sorting (eg: in French, "Le Super Label" would sort as "Super Label, Le").

Related Fields

There are two other fields in the database that are related to Label Sort Name.

  • LabelName which is the name in its "full" non-latin-script un-transliterated glory :)

  • LabelAlias which is used to catch (slightly different) alternative names and incorrect spellings

Similarly, MusicBrainz also has ArtistName, ArtistSortName and ArtistAlias.
