Label Name

Description

Each Label in MusicBrainz has one Label Name, which is the official name of the label, as found on cd sleeves and/or official documents.

Complications arise when labels are renamed. Usually, one should create two different labels entries and use a LabelRenameRelationshipType between them (be sure to read this document, as renaming are complicated to handle).

A Label Name should be represented as it is spelled on the media sleeves, including use of characters from non latin charsets, stylized characters...

If there exists multiple slightly different names for the label (eg: The Verve Music Group, Verve Music Group, VMG), you should use the most commonly used name, or the one used on the label official site.

Names are not necessarily uniques, and different labels may have the same Label Name. To help differentiate between IdenticallyNamedLabels, you should use a LabelComment and possibly a LabelAnnotation.

Related Fields

There are two other fields in the database that are related to Label Name.

  • LabelSortName determines how a label is sorted alphabetically, and present a version of the name using latin charset, without stylization

  • LabelAlias is used to catch (slightly different) alternative names and incorrect spellings

Similarly, MusicBrainz also has ArtistName, ArtistSortName and ArtistAlias.

Labels suggested readings

Labels in MusicBrainz are an important and relatively complex topic. It's recommended that you first start familiarizing yourself with the basic concepts in the General information category of the navigation bar (up that page).

You may then consult the documentation pertaining to AdvancedRelationships and labels, which are listed on the LabelRelationshipClass page.

Editors who want to do more researches, may consult one of the items listed under Advanced documentation.

If you still need help, you may ask your question on the UsersMailingList, the MusicBrainzForum, the IRC channel, or the [WWW] LabelDiscussion page.

If you're interested in either the future or the past, you may additionally consult/contribute to LabelFuture (suggest enhancements, list problems and limitations, or propose a new masterplan), or LabelHistory (for a list of fixed tickets and some interesting insight into the old days)
