Options

Any format:

• Clear vinyl sleeve (picture disc etc.)
• Paper/Cardboard Sleeve
  • Simple sleeves and folding ones
  • (note: in the current ngs database, this is listed as "Paper Sleeve". If we're actually going to have this much detail, some users are going to list "Other" for cardboard or plastic sleeves. Maybe we should just go with "Sleeve".) Torc 03:03, 18 May 2011 (UTC)
• Four- or five-sided slipcase (the five-sided ones normally being thicker) containing Jewel Case, Super Jewel Box, Digipak (I've got all of those --Shepard 18:18, 22 May 2011 (UTC)) or for box sets
• Cardboard box containing Jewel Cases, Slim Jewel Cases, Digipaks, cardboard sleeves etc. - In this case the different mediums can even come in different sub-packaging. - I've got several of those from the artists Ayreon, Transatlantic, Threshold, Stratovarius. --Shepard 18:37, 22 May 2011 (UTC)
• A (non-wooden) box
• Gatefold (not a packaging type per se, but a property of certain packaging types that would be useful to catalog).
• Funny/Fancy/Novelty pack, perhaps as "Custom Case" (I've got a penguin shaped CD box)
• Picture frame (very rare but as a collector you come across strangest types of packaging)
• Wooden box (some Connoisseur Collection CD's came in a wooden box)
• Lunchbox
• miniature milk crate (I've been seeing a bunch of these milk crate CDs at sites I've worked at; they have the CD and a t-shirt. BrianSchweitzer 18:29, 22 March 2010 (UTC))

  • Apparently there's a CD Single case which is, in slimness, between the regular Jewel Case and the slim one: picture, description in German --Shepard 18:18, 22 May 2011 (UTC)
• Digipak
  • Many different variations of how they fold, how many plastic trays they have, how thick they are, where the booklet goes etc. - The most complicated on I've seen is Demons & Wizards - Touched by the Crimson King which folds open in every direction. --Shepard 18:37, 22 May 2011 (UTC)
  • Digibooks
  • I guess we don't want to differentiate between "proper" Digipaks and copies thereof (sometimes called Digipack); see explanation on Wikipedia --Shepard 18:18, 22 May 2011 (UTC)
  • There are Digipak-like packagins without the plastic part. The CD is in a hard paper sleeve.
