History:Mailing Lists Compared To Forums
| Status: This page has been proposed for deletion. (See the page of current candidates for deletion) |
Reason for deletion: {{{1}}}
Status: Per the author request "After the discussion is closed, this page could be removed.", so DeletedPage. Still, is there anything here worth keeping? -- dmppanda 18:27, 26 February 2008 (UTC) - I still am hearing some people who wish we used forums and not lists - it might be worth hanging on to this as semi-historical, to explain why we use the lists, and not the forums, for style and such... -- BrianSchweitzer 16:10, 08 March 2008 (UTC)
- There already are some words about the differences between the two in Help and other pages accessible from there. Now, maybe we could enhance this a bit with some historical and reasoning about why "we" don't simply switch everything to forums (errr... mainly because forums suck :-) ) - still, this page is not adequate for that IMHO (it's rather inaccurate to explain that). I won't delete it though before such additional explanations are in place. -- dmppanda 16:30, 08 March 2008 (UTC)

Re: http://www.nabble.com/A-ML...-and-a-forum%21--tf2756172s2885.html and http://forums.musicbrainz.org/viewtopic.php?id=15. This is an attempt to sort out what we'd miss if switching to the forums. After the discussion is closed, this page could be removed.
Please try to be factual and objective. :).
This is not intended as a place to discuss (see the first 2 links above for that), but rather to build the big picture.

| replies immediately appear (emails have strange delays sometimes) | ||
| no risk of being spam-filtered | ||
| easier to focus on topic (no branching) | ||
| limits the risk of kiddie-like behaviours | user education + options to disable signatures & smilies display | |
| easier access / searching to newcomers | ||
| possibility to move threads between forums | ||
| gmane.org NNTP gateway | ||
| Automatically notified of all new content | RSS feeds. >but RSS feeds don't allow offline reading --MLL >>Opera and RssReader which I use do allow offline reading (I think they all do. But not writing though) ♡j2- Ability to subscribe to notifications from an entire forum? | |
| possibility to add polls for quick consensus votes | ||
| easy to create subforums dedicated to specific topics (CSG, collaboration, RFV) |

Best of both worlds?
On http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=13560, they allow the forum and the mailing-list to be just 2 ways of displaying / broadcasting the same information. Maybe we could set our system up the same ?
