Description

This AdvancedRelationshipType is used to link a DJ mix track to each of the tracks that were combined to make it, or to link one album to a second, where the first album's tracks are (mostly) DJ mixes of tracks from the second album.

A DJ mix is a sequence of several songs played one after the other, each one modified so that they blend together into a continuous flow of music. Common techniques for this include [WWW] crossfading, [WWW] beat-matching, [WWW] beat juggling or [WWW] scratching.

If the mix is recorded as one long track, each individual source track should be linked to the mix track. This should also be done in cases where a single track on a larger DJ mix encompasses several source tracks. Note that there is currently no way to specify the order in which the source tracks appear. If all (or most of) the tracks of an album were mixed together from all (or most of) the tracks from another album, then the two albums can be related together with a single DJ mix relationship, as a kind of shorthand.

RemixMeansDifferentThings, therefore there are several similar relationship types that might be more accurate than "DJ mix":

  • If the tracks have been more substantially altered, more than is necessary in order for the mix to flow smoothly, the RemixRelationshipType should be used.

  • If pieces of the tracks are jumbled up together to form a substantially new composition, the MashUpRelationshipType may be more appropriate. However, just because fragments of a song appear more than once in the mix, doesn't mean that the mix is necessarily a mash-up - many DJ mixes use that technique.

  • If the songs have been rearranged to fit together, with the whole being re-recorded as a single work, then the MedleyRelationshipType is another possibility.

"Fast mixes" are DJ mixes where a large number of tracks are combined into a single continuous mix, with only a small section from each appearing in the final work. These can also be considered DJ mixes and be represented by this relationship.

This AdvancedRelationshipType is part of the CompilationRelationshipClass.

Role of the Mix DJ

The DJ who produced the mix should be related to the DJ mix with the MixDJRelationshipType.

Relationship Attributes

None are appropriate.

Examples

  • [WWW] All Cylinders is a fast mix of over 100 individual tracks, including [WWW] Drop the Bass and [WWW] Gator. Each of those tracks should be linked with the "has been compiled in a DJ-mix" relationship to the DJ mix.

  • [WWW] The Original Doctor Shade (disc 2) is a DJ-mixed version of a first disc [WWW] The Original Doctor Shade (disc 1).

  • [WWW] Der Oktoberfest Hitmix is a DJ mix of 11 tracks ("blocks") each consisting of short segments from three or four separate songs, along with additional keyboard and drum machine segments linking the songs together into a single album-long mix. Although there is some original material, the purpose of the album is to be a party mix of popular songs, and the credits given are entirely to the original artists, so this counts as a DJ mix. Ideally, each track would be linked to its three or four source tracks.
