Relationship Type "Collaboration"
Link Phrases
artist collaborated on artist
artist was a collaboration between artist
Description
This specifies that an artist collaborated on a project. The second artist is the collaboration as a whole - not just some other artist who is also in the collaboration. It is only intended for short-term projects consisting of independent artists, who move on after the collaboration is finished.
This AdvancedRelationshipType for ArtistArtistRelationships is part of the MusicalAssociationRelationshipClass.
Relationship Attributes
"additional"
There is no guideline yet how "additional" (AdditionalRelationshipAttribute) can be used for a collaboration relationship. I suppose this should designate collaborators who did not play a major role in the collaboration.
"minor"
There is no guideline yet how "minor" (MinorRelationshipAttribute) can be used for a collaboration relationship, or what the difference is between "minor" and "additional". Any suggestions would be welcome.
Examples
Mötorhead and
Girlschool collaborated briefly on a project they called
Headgirl, but the collaboration was brief enough (compared to their independent careers) that "Headgirl" isn't considered an independent artist. In this case, a new artist called "Headgirl" gets created, and both Mötorhead and Girlschool have collaboration relationships with Headgirl.
Discussion
There's a big open discussion about how best to represent artistic collaborations: see the discussion section under FeaturingArtistStyle.
Are we supposed to use the DateRelationshipAttribute with collaborations? It seems to me that collaborations can almost be defined to be so brief that these attributes are irrelevant. If people start using DateRelationshipAttribute, then the link phrase "was a collaboration between <x>" won't make sense, because "<x>" will be just one person. --MatthewExon
In a similar way to MemberOfBandRelationshipType, it might be nice to specify what role an artist played in the collaboration, possibly by setting the InstrumentRelationshipAttribute.
