Dan Sumner is a singersongwriter from England who “blends the genres of rock, folk, and blues to create a sound that is entirely his own” The Vinyl District. He began performing solo in 2011 after his band The Dan Sumner Quartet disbanded in 2009 and recorded his first EP The Way We Did in a barn with whatever was to hand; including empty beer bottles and an electric drill. Since then he has continued to experiment with instrumentation and arrangements always looking to create a different sounding record from the last. In 2017 'Storm on an island' was released. Recorded between Battersea Park Studios and Brighton’s Metway Studios by Toby May (The Levellers) and featuring drummer and bassist brothers, John and Joe Sam (Incognito) the album showcased a rockier, more bluesy sound to his previous releases and contained a live version of One World by one of Sumner’s major influences, John Martyn. Many of the songs on Storm on an Island are overtly political, including The Rising Tide which tackles the refugee crisis and the rise of right wing rhetoric in the media. Sumner’s latest album, Ebb and Flow, was released in November 2020 on Naranjo Records and includes the singles Electric Light and Kings Of Our Domain. The record is introspective and searching, yet at the same time uplifting and joyful and is his most ambitious work to date, incorporating strings, layers of guitars, horns and a mixture of acoustic and electronic drums to create a multi-layered, yet subtle soundscape.
