Scrufizzer

Armed with a lyric book, brimming with tongue-twisting one-liners, and a production arsenal yet to be fully witnessed, 23 year old West London rhymer Scrufizzer has already completed the warm-up lap and more.

Having stood firmly on the start line back in his teens, as one of a new generation of MCs preparing to take the baton from grime’s forefathers, the literature-loving artist has become increasingly hard to avoid, whatever style of music you prefer listening to.

Born Romani Lorenzo to a Portuguese mother and Jamaican father, with eight sisters and three brothers for company, resulted in a love of music – and culture – in all of its diverse glory. With influences ranging from the Sting soundclash events of the Caribbean to jazz and classical, dub and rock, Scrufizzer has always been keen to take himself out of a genre-specific comfort zone, working with a medley of producers and artists.

Regarded for his self-appropriated ‘fizzy flow’, high-energy performance and recent signing to us (check the Scrufizzer Vs Black Butter Mix on your next tea break), Scrufizzer‘s been racking up the credits. Having jumped on many collaborations and remixes since his arrival on the scene; it was teaming up with Dizzee Rascal on ‘Guts & Glory’, at the end of 2011 that sealed his potential.

Scrufizzer’s spectrum ranges far and wide working with the likes of Riton, MJ Cole and Friction & Skream. Scrufizzer also joined Kano in the Red Bull studios for an edit of his Boys Noize produced ‘Crazy’, more recently featured on Danny Brown’s ‘Old’ album and has also donated bars to a remix of Angel Haze’s ‘Werkin Girlz’.

A penchant for lyric penning and dabbling with beats began aged 13, a time when he went by the name Scru Face. Having outgrown his early moniker, Scrufizzer’s hard drive is now baring witness to a creative hub of meddling genres, his gymnastic flow wrapping itself around any chosen backdrop.

In terms of his current playlist; Papoose, Graffiti6, Erykah Badu and James Fauntleroy are constantly on shuffle: “I wouldn’t say anyone influences me in particular or deeply, I take inspiration from people I meet every day… But if I could collaborate with anyone, Andre 3000 is up there. Then there’s Chaka Khan and Sampha too,” he laughs. “But let it be known I LOVE Rita Ora… Maxsta, Wiley and Dizzee – they’re all good too.”

Where live dates are concerned, Scrufizzer has gone from rapping on street corners to supporting Kendrick Lamar on his UK tour.

Following up his debut hit single ‘Rap Rave’ (released earlier this year), Scrufizzer’s new track ‘Kick It’, produced by Zed Bias, is ready to open the next chapter in his musical saga.

“I’ve actually got some of Zed’s records on vinyl, like his 138 Trek mix, I used to spend all of my money in Cage Records or Uptown when I was younger. I got in touch, telling him how much I appreciated his work and approached him about doing a track together. Thankfully he was up for it, we went back and forth, met up and the rest is history.”

With new music in the making (and more books on order), Scrufizzer envisages a future where he can combine his fizzy flow tendency with a Daft Punk meets Hudson Mohawke edge; an amalgamation of hip hop and dance sensibilities.

“There’s a track I’ve made called ‘No Need’, it’s probably the best thing I’ve ever done. But I know I’ll change my mind tomorrow. That’s why I just want to live my life and make music. Whatever happens, happens.”
