John Sanders worked as a reknowned jazz musician, after attending The Juillard School and joining the Navy. He entered the Roman Catholic seminary in 1965, was ordained in 1973. He became the first African-American priest in the US state of Connecticut, was named a monsignor by Pope John Paul II in 1988. Sanders also worked as a copyist/archivist of Ellington's manuscripts.
