Christine Ellen "Chrissie" Hynde (born September 7, 1951) is an American singer, songwriter, and musician best known as the leader singer of the rock band The Pretenders. She has been the only constant member of the band throughout its history. She has also released a number of collaborations with other musicians – two of which reached No.1 in the UK Charts.
"I saw her play in Central Park [when the Pretenders played in August 1980]," Madonna recalled. "She was amazing: the only woman I'd seen in performance where I thought, Yeah, she's got balls, she's awesome! . . . It gave me courage, inspiration, to see a woman with that kind of confidence in a man's world."
