Miley Ray Cyrus (born Destiny Hope Cyrus; November 23, 1992) is an American singer, songwriter, and actress. Born in Franklin, Tennessee, she is the daughter of country music star Billy Ray Cyrus. Cyrus began appearing in minor acting roles as early as 2001, though her commercial breakthrough came when she was cast as the titular character in the Disney channel series Hannah Montana (2006-11). The success of the series made Cyrus a household name. Having previously released music under the Hannah Montana moniker, Cyrus released her debut studio album to commercial success in 2007. The album went on to earn a triple platinum certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). She later embarked on her Best of Both Worlds Tour (2007-08), which spawned a feature film and was a commercial success.
Cyrus' continued success led to many controversial moments throughout the following years, and she continued to receive media attention and scrutiny for her personal life and career. Cyrus released her second studio album, Breakout (2008), to commercial success. She starred in the spin-off film Hannah Montana: The Movie (2009), and released the critically and commercially successful single "The Climb" (2009). She later launched the Miley Cyrus & Max Azria fashion line in 2009, along with a promotional extended play for the project. She starred in the film The Last Song (2010), where she met Liam Hemsworth; the two began a romantic relationship during filming. Cyrus transitioned into a more mature image with the release of her third studio album, Can't Be Tamed (2010). The album was met with a mixed critical and commercial reaction, becoming her first studio album not to top the Billboard 200 chart in the United States. Due to numerous controversies in the United States, Cyrus opted not to tour the country during her Gypsy Heart Tour (2011).
Following the release of her third studio album and the final season of Hannah Montana, Cyrus chose to leave Hollywood Records. She chose to take a musical hiatus, focusing on her acting career throughout 2011 and 2012. During this time she appeared in the independent film LOL (2012), among other roles. She teamed with producer Mike Will Made-It to work on her hip-hop influenced fourth studio album, Bangerz (2013). The album was a critical and commercial success, and was promoted with a string of racy and controversial performances. The album spawned her first Billboard Hot 100 number one single, "Wrecking Ball" (2013), and saw Cyrus embark on the Bangerz Tour (2014). Cyrus continued working with Mike Will Made-It for her fifth studio album, while also writing and producing the bulk of the album herself. Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz (2015) was surprise released following the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards, which Cyrus hosted. The album was released for free streaming, and received a mixed reaction from critics and listeners.
Since the start of her career, Cyrus has went on to sell over fifteen million albums worldwide. She has been nominated for over two hundred awards, winning fifty eight thus far. She is the founder of the Happy Hippie Foundation, a non-profit organization set to help LGBT and homeless youth. Cyrus has also openly identified as both pansexual and gender fluid, and is a vegetarian.
