Nirvana (90s US grunge band)
~ Group
Annotation
Nirvana was a popular American alternative rock and grunge band from Seattle, which exploded into the mainstream with the success of the 1991 album Nevermind, and its lead single "Smells Like Teen Spirit", and brought both grunge and alternative rock into the mainstream, which marked the beginning of a dramatic shift of popular music away from the dominant genres of the 1980s (glam metal, dance pop).
Frontman Kurt Cobain, however, felt uncomfortable with the attention given by the media, and challenged the audience with the release of 1993's In Utero, and with the performance of the band at MTV Unplugged the same. The band dissolved in April 1994 with Cobain's death, but its popularity has expanded with the years. The band has sold more than fifty million records, and continues to receive major radio airplay worldwide.
Nirvana is a band whose shows and session recordings have been widely bootlegged as unofficial videos, CDs and raw WAV/FLAC files and mp3s. Details of these releases have been added to Musicbrainz where the sources have been confirmed.
