Donkeyboy are the latest pop sensation to emerge from the shores of Norway. They're young, gifted and full of great tunes. Come autumn, they'll be sharing them with you!
The quintet is fronted by brothers Cato and Kent, who write and share lead vocal duties on almost all of the band's fresh, melody driven and 80s-inspired songs. The brothers are joined by Thomas, Peter and Alexander, who take care of drums, guitar and bass duties. donkeyboy were formed in 2005 and have existed in their current incarnation since 2007. Through endless hours spent in the studio, in addition to numerous gigs and festival appearances - and a freshly minted catalogue of irresistibly catchy tunes - the band are now ready, willing and more than able to scale the heights of the international pop world.
Their first single Ambitions was released on the Warner Music Norway label, March 30th 2009 - and thanks to heavy rotation on Norway’s largest and most important pop radio station (NRK P3) their forthcoming album, Caught in a life is eagerly awaited.
When asked to describe themselves and their music the guys are quick to point out that they're a tightly knit group of friends who feel increasingly comfortable and satisfied with the direction their career is taking. They have set their sights high and are ready for hard work.
Even though, or perhaps because, they were all born in the eighties they feel a close connection to that decade and its musical sensibilities. They all agree: "The days of big budgets, big name producers and big, melodic albums were good days". As for musical heroes and favourite artists they're not too keen to be pigeonholed, but names like Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Fleetwood Mac and Michael Jackson cannot go unmentioned. When asked how they're received by their audience, they add that they have sometimes been compared favourably to fellow popsters Phoenix.
"But hey, let's not get stuck in the past! Our music is new music, more than anything else - and it represents different things to different people. Some people have called it retro fresh or credible mainstream, while we would describe it as a new kind of 80s synth-pop, or fun pop, based on the essence of all that was good about the 80s music scene."
No matter how one would choose to describe it, it is obvious that donkeyboy are onto something good. The radio stations love them, the girls dig them, they're bristling with energy and can-do attitude. The album is now gone platinum in Norway the singles remain at 1,2 and 3 spots in Norway many weeks later. Donkeyboy are untouchable. Some Donkeyboy music is available in the UK by i-Tunes
